JACQUES DOREL

BIO

Born decades ago in Rosehill, Mauritius, in a musical family Jacques Dorel chose that stage name inspired by his idol, Jacques Brel who influenced singers worldwide.

J.D. as he is affectionately called, learned the guitar as a teenager. He accompanied himself on the guitar when he joined a four piece band as a lead singer, along with his 2 brothers.

When he migrated to Australia, he left the stage preferring an academic life. He has since performed only at family gatherings and at intimate parties.

He has come out of retirement to help Bernard Ferriere, the producer of this album as he can sing in Kreol.  He has also cooperated in writing the lyrics of these songs with R.V. Delord the composer.

Press Release:

When Bernard Ferrière visited Mauritius after a long absence, the soulful rhythmic and enthralling sound of the sega struck a chord in his musical soul.

The musician in him toyed with the idea that he could produce an album inspired by the sega, aiming at changing its structure to create a new sound: a style of music which would incorporate the sega, reggae, and the Caribbean beats, which his arrangements will reflect.

He sought the collaboration of a composer and a singer lyricist who was on the same page and very enthusiastic to help him see the project through.

Songs:

Retour: the rhythmic pace taken at a ballad tempo allows you to get outside of yourself with a feeling of expectation and exhilaration that a lover feels to renew acquaintance with a long lost love: “mo prefer pei kot mo ti ne.”

Touzour Morisien: gives a nostalgic feel through sound, creating and sustaining the narrative of people yearning to go back where they belong: “mo rests Morisien.”

Lil Moris: is quite atmospheric and resplendent with the awesome beauty and uniqueness of the island: “sans pareil pou tou Morisien.”

Bato Arrive: offers a combination of rhythmic pulse and rhythms events to depict the excitement and festive mood of the people at the arrival of a supply ship in days gone by: “divin banane fer santé.”

Siklonn: the speed and song forms capture the indomitable spirit and the insouciance of Morisien who enjoy: “La joie de vivre.” Despite the threat from Mother Nature: “pas bizin traka si siklonn arrive.”

Originality is the benchmark of any art. The musical journey we embark on with ‘Le Retour’ captured in these five original songs that are meant to reach and entertain the audience with their catchy tunes.
